Tapes Destroyed . . . The Torture Goes On . . .
Declare: We Won’t Live in a Torture State!
Bush & Company have been caught red-handed lying, torturing and covering it up and yet the crimes continue.
We must respond, beginning NOW – right now in the middle of the “holiday season” -- and build towards major actions and events on January 11th: Be part of a “Stand Against Turture” – this Sunday, December 23rd.
NYC World Can’t Wait is making a broad call to peace organizations, the religious community and all who oppose torture to come together on Sunday, Dec. 23rd, and at 2:00 PM, to assemble at 5th Avenue and 50th Street, to line the streets, many clad in orange jumpsuits, as those tortured in Guantanamo are forced to wear, and the rest carrying signs in orange or black. This Sunday we need to have the simple and clear message made in a visually compelling way that “torture is wrong, it is criminal, it is immoral, it is being done in our name, and it has got to be stopped.”
We invite artists and others to help create a visual scene on this anti-torture Sunday, as was done when artists and others lined 42nd Street soon after 9-11, all carrying simple and similar signs declaring “Our Grief Is Not a Cry for War”. It was a powerful statement and images of it spread around the world. We aim to do the same now against torture.
We invite Churches to call this Sunday for people to speak out against torture, to wear orange as a statement of resistance and to join in lining the streets of mid-town. We have chosen to assemble near the steps of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in recognition of the special role and responsibility that the religious community and all people of conscience have now in opposing torture. [In what direction the line of protesters should stretch from there – down Fifth Avenue to 42nd Street or around the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center, has not yet been determined and your input would be welcomed. But as we talk and flesh out more detailed plans, we need to all be talking and organizing now to make this happen.]
The Bush regime has long been torturing people, and justifying it. We are now at a time when cracks in their torture state can be forced wide open. They have now been caught lying about Iran, destroying the taped evidence of its torture of prisoners – these are blatantly “impeachable” offenses. But whether these outrages will be quietly swept under the rug or become part of the “new normalcy” OR whether they will fuel a vast expanding of the movement and sentiment to DRIVE OUT these criminals in the White House and put a stop to all the crimes they are committing – that is up to us.
Please contact us. Let’s talk and plan to make Sunday as powerful as possible and a “stepping stone” towards even more powerful actions on January 11th.
NO to Torture. We won’t live in a torture state.
