Letter from International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH)

By John Miller
Created Jan 8 2008 - 6:30am

Take Action on the International Day To Shut Down Guantánamo! On January 11th, 2002, the first prisoners arrived at the American detention camp of Guantánamo Bay, Cuba. January 11th, 2008 will mark six years of indefinite detention at Guantánamo.

We would like to thank you all for your mobilization of last January 11, 2007. Our efforts throughout the year 2007 have brought encouraging results, yet more than 300 men are
still trapped there. Today, we are renewing our invitation and ask you to get involved on January 11, 2008 for the closure of Guantanamo.

The International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), along with FIDH’s American member organization, the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), and with Witness Against Torture, is calling for January 11th to be, once again, the International Day to Shut Down Guantánamo. While it will be a day of national shame, it is an opportunity for the civil society worldwide to demand the restoration of the rule of law – and we hope to do so with your help.
